Broadband solutions
Broadband suppliers across the UK are upgrading their networks to full fibre. Full fibre will give you access to faster and more reliable broadband.
Use Ofcom's broadband availability checker to find out what options you have in your area.
Building these networks is going to take time. But there are other solutions available.
4G / 5G - Mobile broadband
4G is the fourth generation of mobile network technology. It's the technology that allows your devices to connect to the internet wirelessly.
5G is the next generation and is rolling out across the UK. 5G operates on higher frequencies and can send more data at higher speeds. It's expected to bring:
- ultra-fast internet
- low latency (minimal delay)
- support for a large number of devices at the same time
Use Ofcom's mobile availability checker to see what type of mobile services are available in your area. Check both indoor and outdoor coverage for data and enhanced data. This will show if a mobile internet service is available.
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)
This is being deployed by some suppliers in areas where it's not workable to build a fibre network. This technology offers similar speeds to 4G internet.
Use Ofcom's broadband availability checker to see if this is available in your area.
Satellite/Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
LEO technology is the most recent satellite solution. It uses many small satellites that orbit the Earth at low altitudes. It can offer reliable and faster internet. Many people have installed solutions such as Starlink using the Access Broadband Cymru Scheme. You can find out more about the various packages on their website.
