Neath Indoor Market is joining more than 400 markets across the country to celebrate ‘Love Your Local Market’, a two week long campaign that highlights the important role markets play within town centres.
Running from Friday 17th May to Saturday 1st June, the campaign is led by the National Association of British Market Authorities, and aims to promote and celebrate local markets worldwide.
Neath Indoor Market is currently home to more than 30 traders ranging from fresh, locally sourced produce to florists, gifts, and delicious food takeaway options. The market is open 8.30am-5pm, Monday to Saturday.
The market's rich history adds to its charm with the first market on the site dating back to around 1837. Almost entirely rebuilt in 1904, the market has stood as a cornerstone attraction for visitors to the town and local residents ever since.
Councillor Jeremy Hurley, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change & Economic Growth, said: “We are delighted to be part of a campaign aimed at raising awareness of local markets.
“Neath Indoor Market is a big part of the town centre’s history and is still a key attraction for local people and visitors alike. The variety of traders, and products on offer is a reminder of why markets remain a fantastic and affordable place to shop.
“Along with recent developments such as the multi-million pound leisure centre and library, as well being successful in securing the likes of Cadno Lounge and The Range, it demonstrates our commitment to improving footfall in the town centre.”
A spokesperson from Neath Market Traders, said: “At Neath Indoor Market, we're excited to be part of the Love Your Local Market campaign, shining a spotlight on community markets. We're proud to showcase our range of local traders and invite everyone to come and have a look at the variety of stalls we have here.
In addition to celebrating existing traders, the market is using the campaign to highlight available stalls for new businesses seeking to establish themselves. For more details on vacant stalls, please contact Michael Jones at m.jones2@npt.gov.uk or call (01639) 686694.
