Copper switch off to digital voice
Traditional landline services rely on a copper connection. These are now changing over to a digital version called Voice over IP (VoIP).
If you use a landline for your home or business, you can still use it after the switchover. Your home or business phone will plug into your router instead of the phone socket.
You will be able to use your landline with your current broadband - you don't need full-fibre broadband.
You should set up your new VoIP service before cancelling your current landline package. You’ll need to contact your provider beforehand so that they can:
- talk you through keeping the same phone number
- explain if your current handset is compatible
Careline or telecare services
Most landline devices will already be digitally compatible. If you rely on care services through your home phone check with your provider:
- that you can still connect when switched over
- what they have put in place for emergencies where the internet isn’t working
If you are in doubt about anything, your provider is your first point of contact to help you.
