Dog warden service frequently asked questions
The Council has a responsibility to collect stray dogs that have reported within Neath and Port Talbot County Borough. The police have a responsibility to deal with and collect dangerous dogs.
There is a dog in my street which appears dangerous will you collect it?
If the dog appears to be dangerous then it needs to be reported to the police as they deal with this type of situation.
There is a stray dog in my street, what should I do?
You need to contact the dog warden who will then come out and collect the dog. We do not suggest that you attempt to the catch the dog yourself. If you have taken the dog in we will still collect it as long as you contact us straight away. If you have had the dog for more than a day or two the dog warden may not collect it.
The neighbours keep letting their dog out to wander, can you do anything?
You will need to contact the dog warden and provide an address. We will then call to the property and speak to the owner.
I no longer want my dog will you collect it?
No. Please contact your local animal shelter.
I’ve lost my dog what can you do?
You will need to give a description of the dog along with your contact details to the dog warden along with the details of where and when it was first reported as being lost. Our dog wardens will then check these details and contact you if we have a dog of the same description.
I’ve lost my dog which is microchipped, can you help me?
If we find the dog, the warden will scan it and attempt to take it directly back to the owner. If the owner can not be located or the details differ, then the dog will be taken to the pound.
How do I get my dog micro chipped and what is the benefit?
You can get your dog micro-chipped at your vets. Micro-chipping requests are carried out periodically in conjunction with the Dogs Trust and on an ad hoc basis by the Dog Wardens - owner will be contacted within 48 hours by the Dog Warden to arrange.
How much does microchipping cost?
The costs vary, ask at your local vets or the dog warden will advise of any charges.
