Coedffranc Central
The ward contains many green spaces well connected by green corridors via tree lined roads and gardens. The Pentreffynnon SINC is a previously developed site on the floodplain wedged between the A465, the Tennant Canal and Skewen. It is a very diverse site with 190 species of plant recorded. The Tennant Canal is also a SINC as an important waterway. A small area of the Neath Estuary is in the south east, and important habitat for wading birds.
Many of the dwellings have opportunities for crevice dwelling bats to roost in. The section of the Tennant Canal in the ward is important for Otter, grass snake and birds such as Kingfishers. The mixture of habitats in Pentreffynnon SINC allows for a variety of species including Emperor dragonflies, House sparrow, Linnet, Bullfinch. The estuary is important for Little egret and Lapwing.
Actions
- Look for locations for NPT Bee Friendly management around the ward i.e. sites where flowers would grow if mowing was paused for the summer
- Raise awareness of wildlife in the ward by holding guided walks
- Encourage the school to take action for nature e.g. manage grasslands as meadows, put up bird and bat boxes and educate pupils about nature
