Briton Ferry East
Mostly sheep grazed grasslands, there is a substantial area of semi-natural ancient woodland in the west. Part of The Waun SINC is in the ward which is designated for its mosaic of habitats. The Bwlch Road Hedges SINC runs along the east of the ward. These are ancient hedgerows and hedgebanks which are present on the first edition Ordinance Survey. A small but important part of the Garth Mor SINC straddles north-west of the ward. This is designated as native woodland. Most of the ward is in a BLine. Jersey Park has areas which are managed for nature.
The mix of habitats can support mammals such as Hedgehogs, Brown hare, Badger and bat species. Bird species such as House sparrow, Song thrush and Dunnock can be seen in urban areas with Ravens, Buzzards and Goshawk hunting on the hillsides.
Actions
- The Friends of Jersey Park are an active volunteer group taking steps to help nature in the park. You can refer constituents who are interested in nature to volunteer with this group.
- Look for locations for NPT Bee Friendly management around the ward i.e. sites where flowers would grow if mowing was paused for the summer e.g on verges, in the parks and in the cemetery.
- Raise awareness of wildlife in the ward e.g. by holding wildlife walks in Jersey Park
