Alltwen
The ward contains 3 SINCs. Two are designated as lowland meadows and Fferm Alltwenganol is designated for its lowland meadows and ancient, species rich hedgerows. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW) own Craig Cilhendre, a mixed broadleaf woodland. It is partially mixed broadleaf woodland topped by upland Oak wood with an understory of Bilberry. Good examples of species rich hedgerows are maintained as part of the Nature Conservation Site scheme. There are a number of watercourses in the ward including a section of the River Tawe.
The River Tawe and its tributaries are important for Otter, Dippers, Kingfishers and foraging bats. The lowland meadows contain many interesting plants such as Eyebright, Greater burnet and Yellow rattle. The range of habitats can support many species of birds and mammals including House sparrow, Linnet, bat species and Hedgehogs.
Actions
- WTSWW may need volunteer help for management or surveys at Craig Cilhendre wood. You can encourage keen constituents to get involved.
- The River Tawe has issues with invasive non-native plant species which you can help tackle by organising balsam bashes.
- Raise awareness of wildlife in the ward e.g. by holding wildlife walks along the River or at Craig Cilhendre
