Public Announcement: Bus Funding

27 June 2023

The Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr Steve Hunt, says it is “imperative” the Welsh Government maintains funding for local bus networks as some bus companies have cancelled routes leaving communities without a bus service.

Addressing Neath Port Talbot residents over the issue, Cllr Hunt said: “I have recently been made aware by Welsh Government of proposed future bus service funding in Wales. The situation continues to evolve rapidly, and there may be significant implications for bus routes.

“At present, there are several uncertainties that need to be addressed and I am concerned that not all the required information is available. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the full impact on bus services in Neath Port Talbot.

“I have accepted the current funding provided by the Welsh Government to protect services in the short term. However, I have requested further discussions take place to ensure appropriate funding levels are established to safeguard all services at their current or suitable levels.

“It is widely acknowledged that more than three-quarters of public transport journeys in Wales are made by bus. To ensure the viability of local journeys for our residents, I have advised Welsh Government that it is imperative that funding for the local bus network is maintained to ensure access to services for residents.

“As a direct result of the continuing uncertainties, I am aware that some local bus companies, unfortunately, have cancelled routes, leaving some communities without a bus service.

“We will continue to work diligently to address these concerns and advocate for suitable funding to sustain and enhance the bus services. Your support and patience during this process are greatly appreciated.

“Thank you for your attention and understanding.”
