Neath Port Talbot Council’s revised Active Travel Network Map has now been approved by Welsh Government!
The maps can be viewed online via the following link: https://datamap.gov.wales/maps/active-travel-network-maps/
The maps show where walking and cycling routes already exist (Existing Routes) and where there are aspirations to upgrade or create brand new routes over the next 15 years (Future Routes).
Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Travel, Cllr Wyndham Griffiths, said: “These revised maps have taken on board a total of 1,181 consultation comments from residents on what they think should be included on the maps.
“As well as making the maps available online we are also launching our new webpages which can be found at www.npt.gov.uk/activetravel.
“The Active Travel Network Map shows the council’s plans to improve towns and villages in Neath Port Talbot; making them more sustainable places to live, work and visit. By upgrading and creating new routes we aim to make active travel the normal way to get around for local journeys, improving air quality, promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing the attractiveness of local places to live and work.”
Active Travel is about making our everyday journeys - such as travelling to school, work or the shops by foot, cycling or wheeling (wheeling includes wheeled mobilities such as various types of wheelchairs and mobility scooters).
Cars can be expensive. Vehicle tax, maintenance, and insurance costs around £969 per year. And that doesn’t include the fuel to power it.
Walking regularly can also reduce the risk of heart disease and active travel helps ease stress levels and can benefit mental wellbeing. Active Travel also cuts congestion, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other air pollutants.
