A ceremony to mark the Proclamation of His Majesty King Charles III’s Accession to the Throne following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be held at 2.30 pm in Neath Port Talbot on Sunday, 11th September 2022.
The Proclamation will be read out publicly in Welsh and in English on the steps of Port Talbot Civic Centre. The Proclamation will be made by the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan in the presence of HM Lord-Lieutenant, The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot County Borough, and the Leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.
Although the heir to the throne automatically becomes monarch on the death of the sovereign, the accession proclamations are the formal announcements of the succession at national and county levels. This is an ancient ceremony: one that will be repeated across the United Kingdom according to custom.
For members of the public wishing to attend the Proclamation Ceremony, there will be free parking in Port Talbot Multi-Storey Car Park (adjacent to the Aberafan Shopping Centre) on Sunday.
Those wishing to also sign the book of condolence at Port Talbot Civic Centre on Sunday are advised that the book will be closed between 1pm and 3pm for the Proclamation Ceremony.
The Books of Condolence at other locations (Neath Civic Centre and Pontardawe Library) will be unaffected, and available for the usual opening hours of 8.30am to 7pm on the day.
