Primary

Neath Port Talbot Road Safety Team have dedicated officers who coordinate and deliver the following schemes to all our Primary Schools.

All officers can deliver classroom sessions covering an array of road safety issues to all age groups.

These sessions take place on your school's yard to develop skills ready for on-road Cycling.

These sessions are aimed at providing pupils with the skills they need to safely cross the road in a variety of situations. These can also include carrying out Traffic Surveys at the road side.

Kerbcraft teaches children aged 5-7 how to be safer pedestrians. It takes them onto real roads, showing them how the right decision-making and behaviour will help them to keep safe. Teaching children at this age ensures this vital skill will remain with them for life. It includes every child who has parental consent. Our aim is to reduce child pedestrian casualties and since Kerbcraft started numbers have declined.

Practical Road-Side Training has proved to be the best way of helping young children to keep safe when near or crossing roads.

The children are taken out of school by trained volunteers, in groups of no more than three to learn 3 main skills:

  1. Choosing safe places to cross the road
  2. Crossing safely near parked cars
  3. Crossing safely near junctions

Each skill is practised at several different locations over a period of approx 4 weeks for each skill, in liaison with the school and its timetable.

We need volunteers to help us teach these critical skills - could you become a volunteer?

Who can be a Volunteer ?

Mums, dads , grandparents, aunties, uncles, school governors and friends of the school.

Can you, or anyone you know, spare 2 hours a week to be a KERBCRAFT Training Volunteer? You could be helping save a life one day. Its not difficult, the coordinator is always present at every session and volunteers will be given full training and support .

Officers will work class by class for approximately 30 minutes to raise awareness of all aspects of Road Safety such as safer crossing places, wearing appropriate clothing, in car and cycle safety.

In Foundation Stage, Officers use role play to bring the scenario to life and also stories and props.

Key Stage Two is more of a discussion format where pupils are encouraged to discuss safer places and also other topics such as in car safety and cycle safety.
