Aberdulais

The ward contains 3 SINCs. Ffynnon Dawel in the south is designated for its scrub communities and neutral grassland. Cilfrew Meadow is a species rich purple moor-grass and marshy grassland. To the north-east is Sarn Helen, a cluster of 6 distinct areas spanning both sides of the Roman Road. They contain 10 distinctive habitats including upland acid grasslands, upland heathland, blanket bog and ffridd. Part of Graig Gwladus Country Park lies within the ward. This is an important woodland site. There are areas of semi-natural ancient woodland throughout the ward and there are many tributaries to the rivers Dulais and Neath. WTSWW lease and manage Coed Gawdir – an acidic pond within an ancient woodland site. Most of the ward is within a BLine. Craig Gwladus Country Park is managed for biodiversity.

The River Dulais and its tributaries are important for Otters, Dippers, Kingfishers and foraging bats. The valley grasslands have a variety of flowering plants including Common Knapweed, Meadow vetchling, Devil’s-bit scabious and Great burnet. Bogs and heathlands on higher ground contain Ling, Bilberry and provide habitat for reptiles and Brown hares.

Actions

  1. The Friends of Craig Gwladus are an active volunteer group taking care of Craig Gwladus Country Park. You can refer constituents who are interested in nature to volunteer with this group.
  2. Maintain the good condition of the upland heath and moorland at Sarn Helen e.g. by removing sitka spruce saplings as they regenerate
  3. Raise awareness of wildlife in the ward e.g. by holding wildlife walks along the River Dulais
