Free school travel

Eligibility

Children ages 5-16 can get free school travel support if they're eligible.

They must:

  • live in the area or be looked after by the council
  • live 2 miles or more away from their primary school
  • live 3 miles or more away from their secondary school
  • have no safe walking route between their home and school
  • have Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or a mobility problem

Distances are measured by the shortest available walking route and may include footpaths.

ALN travel

The same eligibility criteria listed above applies to children with ALN.

If the child's disabilities prevent them from walking to school, travel for a shorter distance will be considered.
