Individual Disabled Parking Places

We provide individual disabled parking places for residents with permanent and substantial mobility problems who need to park outside their properties.

Exceptions may be made in respect of those who do not have substantial mobility problems, with each case considered on its merits.

Individual disabled parking places are not provided:

for family visitors, health professionals or carers who do not live with the disabled applicant.
if a suitable location for parking is available within the property i.e. an accessible garage or driveway.

The applicant should read the policy document with regard to the section on IDPP Provision Eligibility.

Timescales

Please be aware due to high demand for the service and limited funds, the average waiting list for consideration takes approximately 18 months to fulfil.

Application process

Assessment of walking ability

The applicant will be interviewed in person as well as providing supporting evidence of their permanent and substantial medical condition. This must confirm they are unable to walk or have considerable difficulty in walking. Exceptions may be made in respect of those who do not have substantial mobility problems.

Traffic Site Survey

Those who qualify under assessment of walking ability will then have the application address surveyed.

We assess each case on its individual merits, taking into account:

parking arrangements
existing restrictions,
availability in the street.

Legal Process

Once all criteria is satisfied we will seek a legal Traffic Regulation Order. This involves advertising the proposal in the press to advise close neighbours they have an opportunity to object to the proposal.

If there are no objections, the Traffic Order will be sealed. Arrangements are then made to have the bay marked on the road surface, a sign erected on the footway and a parking permit issued.

If we receive valid objections, the Environment and Highways Cabinet Board will make a final decision.
