NPT walk to school
The school runs accounts for a sizeable chunk of rush-hour traffic. It causes congestion, pollution and danger outside most schools.
If more families were able to walk to school occasionally then communities would experience the environmental and health benefits associated with fewer vehicles on the roads in their neighborhood.
Neath Port Talbot's Road Safety Team actively encourages parents/ guardians and pupils to walk to school whenever possible. Neath Port Talbot has seen a massive increase in the amount of Schools organizing walking buses over the last couple of years.
What is a Walking Bus?
Each walking bus has an adult at the front as a driver and an adult at the rear as the conductor. The children walk in a group along a set route picking up additional passengers along the way at designated bus stops. The bus runs rain or shine and everyone wears fluorescent and reflective safety jackets.
As well as those participating gaining valuable road safety skills, children have the opportunity to build friendships and gain some independence in a supervised environment.
