The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot's Remembrance Concert, which returns to the Princess Royal Theatre on Friday October 27th, will be hosted by popular singer, songwriter and radio and TV presenter Mal Pope.
This year, Mal Pope is celebrating 50 years in showbusiness – his career beginning in the 1970s when as a schoolboy he sent a tape of his songs to Radio 1 DJ John Peel
It led to Swansea born Mal signing to Elton John’s Rocket Records and over the years he has written songs for Cliff Richard and the Hollies, duetted with Bonnie Tyler, toured with Art Garfunkel and Belinda Carlisle and is famous for singing the theme tune (in English and Welsh) of hit children’s show Fireman Sam.
On being invited to host the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s Remembrance Concert, he said; “I am delighted to be associated with this event which is dedicated to those from Neath Port Talbot who have risked their lives and in some cases paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms and way of life.”
The special guest at the concert will be singer Sophie Evans.
Sophie rose to fame when she came runner up out of 10,000 hopefuls in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Over the Rainbow’ in 2010, resulting in her becoming ‘alternate Dorothy’ at the London Palladium at the age of 17.
She has since gone on to perform all around the world with amazing performers such as Alfie Boe, Michael Ball, Paul Potts and Kerry Ellis Webber, has enjoyed great critical acclaim as Glinda in the West End production of Wicked, and is a familiar face in film and on TV.
The evening will also feature performances from Number 3 Welsh Wing Royal Air Force Air Cadets Military Marching Band, NPT Cerdd Youth Band, Neath Male Voice Choir and the City of Swansea Pipe Band.
The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Chris Williams said:
“The concert will be a really special evening and I am happy to welcome Sophie Evans as our guest star and Mal Pope as the concert host and compere.”
The concert will end with the last post and thousands of falling poppies - the official emblem of remembrance.”
