We are continuing to review discounts to help identify fraudulent claims among Council Tax payers who are trying to cheat the system.

Every year, councils receive a large number of applications for single person discounts. Some of these applications are not genuine. Like benefit cheats these people are falsely claiming reductions in their bills. Council Tax cheats can be prosecuted through the court system and made to pay back the money they owe.

Checks will be made to ensure everyone who claims the discount is genuine. Sometimes circumstances may not be so easy to explain. To help with this we have included a list of frequently asked questions.
