When are elections held

County Borough Council elections

Councillors are elected once every five years. Neath Port Talbot has 60 County Borough Council seats for 34 electoral wards. The next County Borough Council election will be in May 2027.

Community/Town Council elections

Councillors are elected once every five years. Neath Port Talbot has 250 Town/Community Council seats for 52 communities/community wards. The next Community/Town Council election will be in May 2027. 

United Kingdom Parliamentary General election

Members of Parliament are usually elected once every four/five years when an election is called by the Prime Minister.

The new constituencies covering the majority of the Neath Port Talbot Council area are as follows:

Aberafan Maesteg (including the Bridgend wards of Caerau, Cornelly, Llangynwyd, Maesteg East and West and Pyle) 

Neath and Swansea East (including the Swansea wards of Bonymaen, Clydach, Llansamlet and St. Thomas)

Nine electoral wards within the Neath Port Talbot area making up the Pontardawe, Upper Swansea Valley and Amman Valley have also been moved into the new constituency of Brecon Radnor and Cwm Tawe.

Senedd elections

Members of the Senedd are currently elected once every five years. From 2026 this will change to once every four years.

Significant changes to the Senedd boundaries and voting system are also due to come into force prior to the next polls scheduled for 2026.

Police and Crime Commissioner elections

Police and Crime Commissioners are elected once every four years. Neath Port Talbot falls within the South Wales Police Area for these elections. The next scheduled election will be in 2028.

By-election

A by-election may be held at any time if a casual vacancy occurs, for example to the resignation of an elected member.
