Extra care accommodation
Sheltered and Extra-Care Housing Options for Older People
Based on Aberavon Seafront, Ysbryd y Môr was the first Extra-Care housing complex to be built in Neath Port Talbot. A second scheme has now been developed at Tŷ Twyn Teg in Caewern, Neath. Both schemes are able to offer people aged 60 and over the opportunity to experience a new and exciting alternative to meeting their housing, support and care needs.
There are a number of benefits associated with these schemes:
- maintain your independence
- have your own tenancy i.e. your own front door
- retain the privacy of your own home
- have the reassurance of 24hr support
- feel safe and secure
- keep in touch with friends and relatives
- enjoy a social life
In partnership with Coastal Housing Group Ltd., Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council has developed both complexes to respond to the changing needs and expectations of older people who live locally.
Is this type of scheme the right choice for me?
This accommodation may be a suitable option for you to consider if you would still like to retain the privacy of your own home, but also want the reassurance of 24 hour support on hand should you require it.
The ethos of extra care is to promote and maintain your independence wherever possible. Should family or informal carers wish to continue assisting in your care then this will be encouraged and taken into account in the support arrangements. There are no restrictions on when your family, friends or other visitors can call to see you.
Extra care is not intended to be a substitute for nursing home care. Whilst high levels of support and care can be provided, it may be that your care needs became so great that you need 24 hour nursing care – in this case alternative options may be discussed with you and your family/carers.
